Marine debris — trash and garbage in our waters from land and ocean sources — is a major problem world-wide. It is especially noticeable in the Florida Keys because of our many miles of shoreline that collect debris that the tides and currents carry our way. Added to that is the intensive use of the Florida Keys for tourism and commercial fishing activities which together result in tons of debris trapped in mangroves, on sandy beaches and below the surface of the water on seagrasses and coral reefs.
